Smokey

Embodying the inventive progression of soundsystem music, Smokey - the moniker of Copenhagen’s Simone Øster - exhibits such an extensive bass-bandwidth as to encompass almost the entirety of the vast lineage of low-end music in order to warp it via deeply contemporary and experimentalist stylings. A specific kind of wickedness honed through obsession, a stylistic swagger molded of experience, a sonic attitude sought through an abiding curiosity; in her are distilled the fundaments found in swathes of underground scenes both old and new. For Smokey’s is an ear toward the foundational and the forward thinking. Constantly evolving the rooted essences found in these styles and shaping them for the present. It's those selections which rhythmically encourage a kind of limbered up physicality on the floor. Whether through a 140-swagger, mutant dub-wise enchants and grimey steppers, gnarly attack-mode electro, rude-edged leftfield and hypnotic percussive swirls, brooding 2-step, rampant techno, or straight wiled-out junglism, hers is a diversity of energies, a richness in synergies. In Smokey lies a deep love for system-music. Frequency music. A balanced affinity for the early roots and the contemporary iterations. A prolific and renowned name both locally and beyond, one third of Apeiron crew, curator of Strøm and all-round purveyor of the greater diversified aspects of contemporary underground club music, Smokey brings the smoke. It's all in the name, after all. No Smokey, no fire.
